I Miss Richard Simmons

The voice, the hair, the outfits, that laugh - I miss every single thing about that glitzy, ditsy, outrageous person.

Oh, yes, his workouts, too.

It's funny how now, even almost 40 years later, I still hear certain rock/pop songs on the radio (OK, streaming service, etc.) and my mind automatically goes right into the choreographed moves for that song from one of his Sweatin' to the Oldies or other VHS workout tapes.  My husband looks at me weirdly when I start doing the arm movements, or shout out the lines of encouragement Richard used during the workouts, or start chuckling when when I remember the smile & wink he did after a particularly suggestive one.

I still own every single Richard Simmons VHS and DVD that I ever purchased, and even had some of the tapes transferred to DVD then ripped into mp4 files so at the press of a button I can do one of my favorite workouts any particular morning. Some many of them are "favorites" - I can't choose just one. Some I had to buy multiple times because I kept wearing out the VHS copy, like the original Blast Off and Richard Simmons and the Silver Foxes. Thank goodness they eventually released most of them on DVD! But not all of them did, and the VHS/DVD recorder I owned died before I could transfer all that I owned. (Sob!!)

But I think the one I played the most has never made it out of VHS (officially), and that's Stretchin' to the Classics with Richard Simmons. You can still find used VHS copies wherever used videos are sold, including Amazon. Recently it's been popping up on various people's pages on YouTube. It was so nice to have this old friend back! Just in time, because my VHS player has been getting a bit wonky and the only ones for sale are used ones, probably in worse shape than mine.

And unlike all his other videos, in this one he doesn't utter a sound, not one word! Just Richard in a tank top and spandex shorts doing various stretches, using a chair as a prop for one song, but otherwise just him on a wooden stage in front of a green screened background.

Oh, how I miss Richard! I don't care if he's old and flabby - that's what probably all his original followers look like now, too - I know I do. We know he has bad knees and can't do all the exercise moves like he did before - neither can we. We know he has his mother's genes and probably is as short and round now as she was in her later years - so are we, who have similar genetic heritages.

It would be so nice if he came out with one more exercise video - a real seniors' workout for real seniors! Some of his older senior workouts even 20 year olds had trouble keeping up with (Platinum Sweat, I'm looking at YOU!). The closest he got a what real seniors - not former athletes or professional dancers like he hired for Platinum Sweat - can do was shown in the Richard Simmons and the Silver Foxes one, where the exercises were parents of celebrities, including his mom.

Some of them can't keep up with the speed and the movements, but that's okay - it proves these are ordinary humans! This is the type of workout I want to see him do now!

But if you want to see what he did then, his "people" have been uploading many of his old workouts, some in just 10 minute segments, to his YouTube channel. Stop by for a blast of nostalgia and remember the good old days of Richard Simmons, the Weight saint.

The Unbearable Weight of Diet Culture - Good Housekeeping Article

The Unbearable Weight of Diet Culture

For centuries, we have been led to believe that there is a “right” way to eat in order to achieve a healthy, attractive body as a means to a more fulfilling life — and that any failures on this front are ours alone. But it's time to face reality.

Farewell, Arecibo

Mine is just one of the many posts appearing around the world today, thanking and saying Goodbye to the Arecibo Observatory today. Out of all the bad things that have happened in 2020, this may be in the top 3 and had probably depressed me the most.

The radio-telescope has been featured a number of times in the media, from this episode of Reading Rainbow:

the X-Files (Season 2 Episode 1: Little Green Men), James Bond movies (Goldeneye), and my favorite Jody Foster movie, Contact.

But the unthinkable has happened. Funding has been low for years and routine maintenance took a back seat to emergency repairs when possible, but thanks to all the tropical storms over the years, when the dish started to collapse recently there were no funds left for its repair. Requests for cash went out, but relief didn't come soon enough.

So, R.I.P., Arecibo Observatory. Hopefully some gajillionaire will come along and finance the building of a new telescope, a 'la Hadden (John Hurt's character in Contact). But until then, always remember, to quote Fox Mulder's warning to Jorge, "Nojo on the rojo."

Memory Lane

Memory Lane

I came across this phrase in a book yesterday: "fender skirts."

I haven't heard this term in a long time, and thinking about "fender skirts" started me thinking about other words that quietly disappear from our language with hardly a notice, such as "curb feelers" and "steering knobs."

Since I'd been thinking of cars, my mind naturally went that direction first. Kids, you will probably have to find some elderly person over 60 to explain some of these terms to you.

Remember "continental kits"? They were rear bumper extenders and spare tire covers that were supposed to make any car as cool as a Lincoln Continental.

When did we quit calling them "emergency brakes"? At some point "parking brake" became the proper term. But I miss the hint of drama that went with "emergency brake."

Didn't you ever wait at the street for your dad to come home so you could ride the "running board" up to the house?

Here's a phrase I heard all the time in my youth but never anymore: "store-bought." Of course, just about everything is store-bought these days. But once it was bragging material to have a store-bought dress or a store-bought bag of candy.

"Coast-to-coast" is a phrase that once held all sorts of excitement and now means almost nothing. Now we take the term "worldwide" for granted. This floors me.

On a smaller scale, "wall-to-wall" was once a magical term in our homes. In the '50s, everyone covered hardwood floors with, wow, wall-to-wall carpeting! Today, everyone replaces wall-to-wall carpeting with hardwood floors. Go figure.

Most of these words go back to the '50s, but here's a pure '60s word I came across the other day: "rat fink." Ooh, what a nasty put-down!

Here's a word I miss: "percolator." That was just a fun word to say. And what was it replaced with? "Coffee maker." How dull. Mr. Coffee, I blame you for this.

I miss those made-up marketing words that were meant to sound so modern and now sound so retro: words like "DynaFlow" and "Electrolux." Introducing the 1963 Admiral TV, now with "SpectraVision"!

Here's food for thought: Was there a telethon that wiped out lumbago? Nobody complains of that anymore. Maybe that's what castor oil cured, because I never hear mothers threatening kids with castor oil anymore.

Some words aren't gone but are definitely on the endangered list. The one that grieves me most is "supper." Now everybody says "dinner." Save a great word. Invite someone to supper. Discuss fender skirts.

Someone forwarded this to me. I thought some of us of a "certain age" would remember most of these. So, just for fun, pass it along to others of "a certain age."

Received from Thomas Ellsworth.

Roger Barr and His Tales (Nothing to do with food, just some fun)

I really love this man - Roger Barr! He was the best part of the Velocity (now MotorTrend) TV show Chasing Classic Cars. The day was always brighter when he came on with his "Rogerisms" and tales of past victories. He's in his 80's, had both knees replaced, loves his popcorn, and still works doing what he loves - tinkering with cars, the sportier and faster the better, and now he's doing them for a different garage, one who appreciates his wisdom and know-how, The Paddock Classic Car Restorations. His wife and other family members maintain the "thing" he refers to in this video - the Roger Barr Facebook page.

BTW, in this Facebook post he corrects some erroneous information in that first link above.

Enjoy!

R.I.P., Curly Top

I just heard on TV that Shirley Temple has died.

Here she is in one of my favorite movies of hers, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm:

You and Mr. Bojangles are now tap dancing together again in Heaven.

Jeanette DePattie - The Fat Chick

Back in June 2013 I posted a video of hers, saying I wanted to keep it here so I don't lose it in the future. Well, that one disappeared, anyway. (sigh) Let's try again.

Here she is on Katie Couric's show in December 2013 talking about why one shouldn't stop living until they reach some arbitrary weight goal.

Her New Year's Eve message about weight cycling. In this video she also announces some programs she's starting up in 2014.

And a call to make exercise a regular part of your life:

And don't forget her exercise DVD

and book on exercising at any size, both called The Fat Chick Works Out!

Invisible Illness Awareness Week

I never knew anything like this existed!
http://invisibleillnessweek.com/

Aside from his fading scar, my husband's coronary artery disease is invisible. My CFS is invisible, as is my hypothyroid, hypoglycemia, partial deafness, asthma, and degenerative disc disease and other arthritis and neuritis problems. And now that my labwork is showing I have an autoimmune disease, add that to the list.

I think I'll be spending a lot of time on that web site the next few days.

"No Longer Defensible" Post from Fat and Not Afraid Blog

This blog gets better each time I read it! Be sure to read the comments, too.

“No Longer Defensible”

June 25, 2013

I don’t think there is a person who is connected to the wider world somehow (e.g., internet, evening news, newspapers) who doesn’t know that the AMA declared obesity a disease this week.  Many Fat Acceptance bloggers have written about it.
In the same week that this is happening, Time Magazine posted an online article about, well, about a sort of Fat Acceptance.  Oh, they didn’t call it that, but that’s what it was.

Jeanette DePattie (The Fat Chick) In the Mainstream Media

This is mostly here so I can find it again in the future, since I have a bad habit of losing videos I want to do repeat watchings of. Enjoy!

Secrets of Old Age Video

Found this on YouTube today. Yeah, it's a little corny and preachy at times, but it has beautiful graphics and a nice message.

Today Is International No Diet Day

In the fat acceptance community, today is celebrated as International No Diet Day, a day when we fatties should be proud of who and what we are and once again vow to never "diet" with weight loss in mind ever again. We're told over and over again that we CAN be fat and healthy. Many of us prove it day after day. We have excellent lab values, our blood pressure is fine, we have no limitations in our activities of daily living.

But I know in my heart that this isn't true.

Because of the large amount of weight my body has, my feet hurt and the bones in my feet shirt out of position, exacerbating the arthritis, causing tendinitis and leave me prone to corns, calluses and plantar fasciitis.

Because of the large amount of weight my body has it causes pains in my knees, hips, even my neck, and may have contributed to the degenerative disc disease and neuritis I have.

Because of the large amount of weight I carry I get winded climbing up the three flights of stairs to my apartment, while walking a few blocks to my car, while shopping in large department stores or malls.

BUT

From almost 60 years of dieting, my metabolism is equal to that of a slug or sea sponge. My core body temperature on awakening routinely is between 95 and 96 degrees F, my resting pulse rate is typically in the 40's, I've officially been diagnosed as hypothyroid (but still being under treated), barely sleep at night, have severe brain fog, and I gain weight if I eat even 1000 calories a day. In fact, even as a 10 year old active tomboy I gained weight at 1000 calories a day.

I KNOW dieting for weight loss doesn't work. I KNOW very low calorie food plans, the ONLY thing that will make me lose about a pound a month, is harmful to my health and will cause even slower metabolism. So why do I still harbor the Fantasy of Being Thin? Why do I still read all these weight loss books, visit diet doctor sites, read OA literature, load up on half a paycheck's worth of greens and other fresh produce (which always goes bad before half of it gets eaten), and when I have the energy, still weigh and measure everything I eat?

I guess I'm just, as my husband frequently says, fucked in the head when it comes to my weight. Even after all these decades.
